As your child enters the later elementary and preteen years, screens and technology become an increasingly significant part of everyday life. Phones, tablets, gaming, social media, streaming, and the internet can provide incredible opportunities for learning, connection, and entertainment—but they also introduce new challenges that require intentional parenting.
This is an important season to establish healthy habits and boundaries around technology before your child gains greater independence. Rather than simply asking, “How much screen time is too much?” parents should be asking, “How can I help my child learn to use technology in a way that honors God and benefits their life?”
Your role is not simply to restrict technology, but to teach your child how to navigate it wisely. Set appropriate boundaries, model healthy screen habits, talk openly about what they see and experience online, and gradually teach them to exercise self-control and discernment. The goal isn't to raise children who are afraid of technology, but to raise young people who know how to use it without being controlled by it.
